Operation Regen: Restoring Soil, Restoring Livelihoods

With Farm Hero, WFB's Operation Regen brings depleted farmland back to life — cover crops, compost, and farmer-led training that rebuilds topsoil one field at a time.

You cannot bank grain from dead soil. Across Sub-Saharan Africa, decades of continuous cropping have stripped fields of the organic matter that makes harvests possible.

Operation Regen, run with our partner Farm Hero, pairs agronomy with incentives: farmers who adopt regenerative practices — cover cropping, composting, minimum tillage — gain preferred access to WFB's trade corridors and reserve purchase programs.

Early fields show organic matter recovering within three seasons, with yields rising alongside it. The program's insight is simple: regeneration scales when it pays. Soil health is not charity — it is the foundation of the entire food bank.
